Why Employers Should Prioritize Reducing Sedentary Behavior in their offices

In today’s increasingly sedentary work environments, where employees spend the majority of their day sitting at desks or in front of computers, the negative impact of prolonged sitting on health and productivity cannot be ignored!

According to a survey by CareerBuilder, 22% of employees admit to spending at least one hour per day on personal activities unrelated to work, such as browsing the internet, checking social media, or making personal calls or texts. The lack of movement can have a direct impact on employee productivity.

Impact on Employee Productivity and Engagement

Reduced Blood Flow to the Brain. Prolonged sitting can lead to reduced blood flow to the brain, which can impair cognitive function and mental clarity. When blood flow is restricted, the brain may receive less oxygen and nutrients, leading to decreased focus, attention, and concentration.

Decreased Brain Activity. Sedentary behavior has been associated with decreased brain activity in areas of the brain responsible for attention and focus. Spending long periods sitting in front of a computer screen or in meetings can lead to neural fatigue, making it more difficult for employees to maintain focus and mental alertness.

Increased Mental Fatigue. Sedentary behavior can contribute to feelings of mental fatigue and exhaustion. Employees who spend prolonged periods sitting may experience increased levels of mental fatigue throughout the day, making it challenging to sustain focus and attention on tasks.

Impaired Cognitive Function. Sedentary behavior has been linked to impaired cognitive function, including decreased memory retention, problem-solving skills, and decision-making abilities. Employees who engage in prolonged sitting may experience difficulties processing information and staying engaged in tasks, leading to decreased focus and productivity.

Distraction and Restlessness. Sedentary behavior can contribute to feelings of restlessness and boredom, leading employees to seek distractions or lose focus on their work. When employees spend long hours sitting in one place, they may become more susceptible to distractions from their environment, such as noise, interruptions, or irrelevant stimuli.

Decreased Task Engagement. Sedentary behavior can lead to decreased engagement in tasks and activities. Employees who spend prolonged periods sitting may experience reduced motivation and interest in their work, making it more challenging to stay focused and immersed in their tasks.

As you can see, sedentary behavior can have significant negative effects on employee focus, attention, and cognitive function. This is something to take pretty seriously, for yourself, and your employees.

You can mitigate these effects by introducing a Wellness Initiative that promotes regular movement and physical activity in the workplace, encouraging employees to take breaks and stretch throughout the day, and providing ergonomic workstations that support proper posture and comfort.

Strategies to Promote Movement

Implement Walking Meetings. Encourage employees to conduct walking meetings instead of traditional sit-down meetings. Walking meetings not only promote physical activity but also stimulate creativity and collaboration.

Provide Standing Desks. Offer standing desks or adjustable workstations that allow employees to alternate between sitting and standing throughout the day. Standing desks can help reduce prolonged sitting and encourage movement.

Schedule Regular Stretch Breaks. Encourage employees to take regular breaks to stretch and move their bodies. Schedule brief stretching sessions or movement breaks throughout the day to help employees stay limber and energized.

Organize Group Fitness Activities. Arrange group fitness activities such as yoga classes, group walks, or fitness challenges to promote physical activity and encourage camaraderie among employees.

Create Active Workstations. Provide equipment such as stability balls, resistance bands, or under-desk pedals that employees can use to incorporate movement into their workstations. These tools can help improve posture, increase circulation, and reduce sedentary behavior.

Offer Incentives for Physical Activity. Implement incentive programs or rewards for employees who participate in physical activity initiatives. Offer incentives such as gift cards, wellness merchandise, or extra time off as rewards for achieving fitness goals or participating in wellness activities.

Encourage Active Commuting. Encourage employees to commute to work using active transportation methods such as walking, biking, or using public transit. Provide incentives or benefits for employees who choose to commute actively, such as subsidized transit passes or bike storage facilities.

Foster a Culture of Movement. Create a workplace culture that values and promotes movement and physical activity. Encourage managers and leaders to role model healthy behaviors and support employees in prioritizing their health and well-being.

Offer On-Site Fitness Facilities. Provide on-site fitness facilities or gym memberships to encourage employees to engage in regular physical activity. Having convenient access to exercise equipment and facilities can make it easier for employees to incorporate movement into their daily routine.

Educate Employees About the Benefits of Movement. Bring in a Corporate Wellness professional to provide education and resources to help employees understand the importance of movement for their health and well-being. Offer workshops, seminars, or on-going wellness support to encourage physical activity and provide tips for incorporating movement into daily life.

By becoming a workplace that prioritizes movement and physical activity, you can help employees combat sedentary behavior, improve overall health, and majorly enhance productivity and morale.
