How to Be the Place People Want to Work

We have all had that boss…

The one everyone hates and we know doesn’t care the smallest bit about their employees.

(Hopefully you don’t have that boss now!)

Do you recall how you felt working for them?

You probably had a love/hate relationship. You wanted to prove yourself and you wanted to do well, and you probably needed the money. You also probably wished you could quit about every other day!

If you can remember… were you motivated to succeed? Were you inspired to over-deliver? Did you feel a sense of personal success when you helped his business succeed?

The answer is likely no. 

One of the most important ways to have your employees “buy in” to your companies success, is by your companies success also being their success. When employees see the big vision and feel part of something that inspired them, it becomes part of their personal success as well.

For example, employees should always know the Mission and Vision statement of the business, where it’s going and what it will mean for them. This is why many companies nowadays have social causes that they align with. 

One way you can create a positive work environment is by promoting work life sustainability.

The reason your employees are working is 1. To make money to fund their lives and 2. Hopefully to feel fulfilled in some way and to contribute to the world.

If you give them the opportunity to feel fulfilled, use their unique talents, and to contribute to the world, their job will become more than just a job. They will be much more invested in being a valuable employee and caring about the success of the company as a whole.

To invite your employees to extend their care beyond their own personal interests, you must also extend your care beyond your own business interests. You can do this by caring about the health and well-being of your employees.

This can look like 1. Knowing their personal goals and how they can fulfill them through their work with you and 2. Promoting their health and well-being, caring about them beyond just the time they are working

Many companies provide health and wellness services now and the results are tremendous.

Employees feel the support and respond with increased engagement, loyalty, and intent to stay. Of those, about 85% say they intend to stay at their jobs. In contrast, of those whose employers aren’t engaged in their wellness, only about 40% say they enjoy work, and 58% say they intend to stay at their current company.

Here are some additional statistics

  • More than 9 in 10 workers say they feel more motivated at their job if their leaders support well-being efforts. (APA, 2016) 
  • 70% of employees enrolled in wellness programs have reported higher job satisfaction than those not enrolled in the companies’ program. (Aflac, 2019) 
  • Employee morale is cited as the most improved (54%) metric from implementing wellness plans. (Hub International, 2017) 
  • 89% of workers at companies that support well-being initiatives are more likely to recommend their company as a good place to work. (Forbes, 2019) 
  • Over 80% of employees whose employers are engaged in their wellness say they enjoy work. (Zippia, 2022) 
  • Of those, about 85% say they intend to stay at their jobs. 
  • In contrast, of those whose employers aren’t engaged in their wellness, only about 40% say they enjoy work, and 58% say they intend to stay at their current company.

In addition to this, there is actually an ROI on providing health and wellness benefits for employees.

  • Companies with highly successful health and productivity initiatives generate 11% more revenue per employee, 1.8 fewer days absent per employee per year, and 28% higher shareholder returns. (Drtracygapin.com, 2020) 
  • 60% of respondents reported that workplace wellness programs reduced their organization’s health care costs. (US Chamber, 2016) 
  • For every dollar spent on wellness programs, the company saves $5.82 in lower employee absenteeism costs. (ISDH
  • Wellness programs have been shown to reduce absenteeism by 14-19%. (Zippia, 2022)
