Living Your Best Life Now: Holistic Approach to New Habits

In this fast-paced world of high achieving corporate and/or business success, the drive to hit the next goal often comes at the expense of health and overall well-being. Juggling career, family responsibilities and personal growth can quickly lead to burnout, low energy, brain fog and those pesky weight, mood and hormonal challenges.

It is important to take a holistic approach in developing new habits. Each area of our lives intersects with other critical areas. So while you are busy creating new habits to improve your life, remember that small habits can create massive impact. You don’t have to be restricted to just healthy habits or just regular daily habits. There are many different types of habits that will benefit you in your work, finances and relationships. Also, just because there may be some standard quo habits, goals or KPIs that you can create, it doesn’t mean that they are the best ones for you to focus on right now. Let’s take a look.

Where are You Falling Behind?

Before creating your first new habit, think of where in your life you are falling behind. This doesn’t mean you are an outright failure, but just an area of your life where you don’t focus as much attention as the other areas of your life. Most people have at least one. This might mean you work hard, but neglect your health. Or you eat very healthy, but you have trouble saving money. Maybe you don’t get enough sleep because you are always distracted at night.

This can tell you what areas need improving first before moving on to other habits.

What do YOU Complain About the Most?

Another way to figure out where your new habits should start is based on what you tend to complain about. Think about the last time you complained to someone or yourself about what isn’t going your way, or what isn’t working in your life. What aspects of your life trigger frustration or dissatisfaction? Do you complain that you never have enough energy to get through your day? What about the fact that you don’t know why you are always bloated or your clothes don’t fit? Are you frustrated because you never have enough time to get everything done? Your complaints often hold the key to the areas in which new habits can make the most significant impact.

The Power of One:

Remember that even if you come up with a list of new habits to form in your life, you still want to start with just one at a time. Even if you have 5 small habits focused on one key area, you want to start with just one of them before moving on to the next.

Consider creating a list of potential habits to introduce into your life, but begin with the one that aligns with your identified area of improvement. If, for example, you struggle with work-life balance, start by setting boundaries on your work hours or incorporating mindfulness practices into your daily routine. Remember, small, intentional changes can lead to significant, lasting results.

Becoming Unconscious Competent:

Knowing when it’s time to move on to the next habit is crucial. When the initial change becomes second nature, you’ve reached a state of “unconscious competence.” This is the signal that you’re ready to layer on another positive habit, gradually building a foundation for sustained success and well-being. Remember, your habits become your character and your character becomes your destiny.

Where are you headed? What is in your future? What are you creating today and five years from now? Habits matter.
